On 17 July 1818, R.S. Clardy (Richard Smith Clardy, so named in 2 CONC another deed) bought 42 acres from Daniel Murphy. (Recorded in the May 2 CONC Term 1819) The description said "3 entries adjacent to Thos. SW corner of Thos. Keesee' 300 acre tract. 2 CONC [Franklin County, Deed Bk F pg 89] On 21 Apr 1814, (recorded 16 Nov 2 CONC 1816), Thomas Keesee sold 20A to George Haygood for $15.00 on the east 2 CONC side of Rock Creek - Elk River. witnesses by Benj. Majors & Wm. 2 CONC Larater.[Franklin County, Deed Bk J pg 86] (note. R.S. Clardy was married 2 CONC to Theodosia Majors) Also on 11 Nov 1817 (rec. Aug term 1818) Thomas 2 CONC Keesee sold 50a on the west side of Rock Creek - Elk River to Solomon 2 CONC Murphree. (?same land that RS Clardy bought from Soloman Murphy in 1818?) 2 CONC [Franklin County Deed bk J, pg 428] ?Where & when did Thomas Keesee get 2 CONC the 300 acre tract? I did not copy the deeds, just looked at them & made 2 CONC notes, forgetting to note the witnesses. I was delighted to find Thomas 2 CONC Keesee (I assume it is ours) in Franklin County, TN, especially next door 2 CONC to some of the Clardys. The family, in a desposition of the estate of 2 CONC Rena Clardy, daughter of my Benj. & his 2nd wife, Ann House, says: 2 CONC "Benjamine Clardy left home as a young man and got work on the farm of 2 CONC Colonel Tom Keesee, a large slave owner of Pickens County, Alabama. He 2 CONC later married Colonel Keesee's daughter, Agnes, and settled in Arkansas. 2 CONC They raised several children - 5 of whom lived to rear families of their 2 CONC own. After Agnes' death, Benjamine married the Widow House who became the 2 CONC mother of Richard and Rena Clardy. Richard raised 3 sons & 1 daughter. 2 CONC Rena, who never married, was quite a successful businss woman & at her 2 CONC death about 1946 her fortune was distributed to her father's descendants. 2 CONC Richard, who was still living, received a full child's part, and the 2 CONC remainder was destributed according to position in the following 2 CONC families." 2 CONT I have a copy of the list of recipients. I have always wondered how Agnes 2 CONC Keesee & Ben Clardy got together. But it makes sense to me that he knew 2 CONC the family & probably Agnes while Thomas Keesee was in Franklin County. 2 CONC And, possibly, when Thom moved to Alabama, he just went, too. Then, too, 2 CONC I think there may have been friction in the Ben Clardy family as several 2 CONC of the sons moved to Bedford County, TN, soon aafter the death of their 2 CONC father in 1823. Of course, we haven't found proof of any of the children 2 CONC of Ben & Agnes Booth Clardy except for a couple of daughters & my Ben. 2 CONC However, I believe that Richard Smith Clardy, James (who married Frances 2 CONC Richardson), and possibly a Joseph who were all in Franklin County 2 CONC earlier were theirs as well as Martha who married Wm. Farris & a Sally 2 CONC who married her cousin John Clardy & lived in SC. But, to the best of my 2 CONC knowledge, no family group has been proven for Benjamin & Agnes Booth 2 CONC Clardy. 2 CONT 2 CONT __________ 2 CONT 2 CONT Rhonda Coleman Ellison, Bibb County, Alabama: The First Hundred Years, 2 CONC 1818-1918 (Tuscaloosa: University of Alabama Press, 1984). 2 CONT P. 3: 2 CONT "Throughout the years, the exact position of the line between this county 2 CONC [Bibb] and Tuscaloosa has often been debated. Sandlin, 2 CONT Natchez, La. 2 CONT 2 CONT My Dear Cousin: 2 CONT 2 CONT I trust you will pardon me for taking the liberty of writing you. My son, 2 CONC John, who lives at Brewton in this state, visited me a short time ago, 2 CONC and showed me a letter he had received from you, enclosing the family 2 CONC tree of our family, and asking him if he was related, or was of the same 2 CONC family as your grandmother. I recognized the kinship as soon as I scanned 2 CONC it, and pointed out some errors. 2 CONT 2 CONT Before proceeding to point them out to you, permit me to say that I am 2 CONC perhaps the senior member of the family now surviving. If Henry, Uncle 2 CONC Marshall's eldest son, is dead, I have a perfect right to set up the 2 CONC claim. I was born on the 21st of March, 1842, which places me now near 2 CONC the end of my seventy-seventh year. I remember distinctly the members of 2 CONC your family. When Uncle Haywood first moved to Louisiana, he made 2 CONC periodical visits to this state, on which occasions he was accompanied by 2 CONC all members of the family, including Aunt Mary. I remember your mother 2 CONC very well, and know when she married Mr. Murphy. I also remember when 2 CONC Cousin Nancy married Mr. Pickel. I do not remember that Uncle Haywood 2 CONC visited this state after the great war of 1861-5. Your Uncle John did pay 2 CONC us a visit after that event and spent some time here, returning to 2 CONC Louisiana. As you did not mention him I presume he is dead. I knew that 2 CONC your Uncle Henry was killed in battle during that tragic period of 2 CONC 1861-65. I note that you knew that my brother James was also killed, and 2 CONC that Judge, Uncle William's son was killed during the same period. 2 CONT 2 CONT My grand Father, your great grand father was named John, simply, not John 2 CONC Wesley. He was born and named before the celebrated John Wesley the 2 CONC famous founder of Methodism, reached the zenith of his fame. My grand 2 CONC father was a great admirer of him, as they were contemporaneous. I am 2 CONC enclosing the family tree with such information as I have in my 2 CONC possession and remember. After the great war of over fifty years ago, 2 CONC Uncle LeRoy and Uncle Marshall paid us some visits. My grand mother 2 CONC Purifoy lived until 1875 and up to the time of her death there were 2 CONC occasional visits from them or some members of their families. Uncle 2 CONC LeRoy's son Francis has made several visits. I have occasionally met him 2 CONC at the Reunions of Confederate Veterans, as I attend most of these. By 2 CONC comparing notes, we have found that we both attended one or more such 2 CONC reunions without meeting. 2 CONT 2 CONT As long as Grand Mother Purifoy lived, and through Uncle Wesley, we used 2 CONC to keep up with the kinfolks in Louisiana and Arkansas. But after they 2 CONC died the younger set seemed to get away from each other. As the older 2 CONC ones dropped out the tie seemed to weaken. Aunt Martha Hobdy has but one, 2 CONC possibly, two daughters living. If there are any of Uncle William's 2 CONC children alive, I do not know their location. Years ago, Osborne Henry 2 CONC moved to Texas and married and I presume has died. Not one of them in 2 CONC this state is alive. I do not know how many of Uncle LeRoy's children are 2 CONC living, John, the eldest, is dead out, left several boys. I think all of 2 CONC Uncle Marshall's first children are dead. Nancy married a man named 2 CONC Powell. I have heard that he was not very successful. John was last heard 2 CONC from in Colorado, but has not been heard from in a number of years. There 2 CONC are several thrifty men of Uncle Marshall's second lot, Ihave been told. 2 CONC They live in western Arkansas. 2 CONT 2 CONT Of my father's nine children there were five alive when I last heard from 2 CONC them. Two were in Texas, and three in this state. I have one full brother 2 CONC and a half sister living in this state. You will note that I am the 2 CONC eldest. Brother Edmund, my youngest full brother, nearing the end of his 2 CONC seventy-third year, lives at Marion, in this state. One of his children, 2 CONC a daughter, lives in Texas; one, a son, lives in Arizona: one, a son, 2 CONC lives in Yazoo City, Miss. He has two married daughters living in this 2 CONC state. Of my eight children, one died in infancy, three died just as he 2 CONC reached maturity. I have four now living; a daughter in Texas: three sons 2 CONC in this state. I have a son named LeRoy. He has two married daughters. My 2 CONC daughter in Texas has nine living children; five sons and four daughters. 2 CONC Three sons in the army in France. I have four grand sons in the army. 2 CONT 2 CONT Pardon me for a personal reference; but I see from your family tree that 2 CONC your family have no knowledge of my career, and perhaps a brief statement 2 CONC on that line will not be without interest to you. I have held several 2 CONC positions of honor and trust. Thirty-eight years ago I was elected 2 CONC Probate Judge of my county, Wilcox. served afterword in the legislature. 2 CONC In 1892, was elected state auditor; served four and a half years as such; 2 CONC served two appointments as examiner of accounts, eight years; served four 2 CONC years as state treasurer; am nearing the end of a four years term as 2 CONC secretary of state. When I complete my term in this office I will have 2 CONC served a little over twenty-eight years as an official, state and county, 2 CONC twenty years of which were in state offices. You will see by the enclosed 2 CONC card that I served approximately four years as a soldier of the 2 CONC Confederate states, and engaged in nearly half a hundred battles, great 2 CONC and small. Was wounded three times slightly. I think I hear you say 2 CONC mentally that I was extremely fortunate to get off so lightly. I walked 2 CONC home from Appomattox Court House, and as the bridges were all burned or 2 CONC otherwise destroyed, I had to wade or swim nearly all the streams between 2 CONC that point and my home. 2 CONT 2 CONT My grand father Purifoy was born in Craven county, North Carolina. He 2 CONC moved from that state to Georgia about 110 years ago, accompanying his 2 CONC two elder brothers, William and Arrington. He was a boy or young man just 2 CONC grown. Seven of his children were born in Hancock county Georgia. He 2 CONC moved to Alabama between 1825 and 1828. Settled, first in Barbour county, 2 CONC and moved into the wilderness of Dallas county, near the northern edge of 2 CONC Wilcox, within three miles of Snow Hill, and cleared land and built his 2 CONC home, practically camping out until the houses were built. This was 2 CONC between 1830 and 1835. My grand father died before I was born. I was born 2 CONC in the Dallas county home in 1842. My father moved into Wilcox county, 2 CONC when I was about two years old, and I lived in that community, Snow Hill, 2 CONC until I moved to this city in 1892. 2 CONT 2 CONT Very few of the Purifoy name live in the community of the old home. They 2 CONC seem to have been afflicted with the wander lust and have scattered 2 CONC broadcast. One of Uncle William's grand son's lives at Furman, which was 2 CONC Snow Hill, when your mother used to visit there, and is post master 2 CONC there. Snow Hill is now about two miles west of its former location. On 2 CONC of my nephews, Esten, Scott's son, lives at Camden, the county seat of 2 CONC Wilcox. His sister married a young lawyer at that place, named Miller. 2 CONC The latter was recently elected state senator from that county, which he 2 CONC will hold for four years. 2 CONT 2 CONT Aunt Martha Hobdy died a few years ago at the ripe age of ninety-eight. 2 CONC She come near outliving all her children. Her descendents are scattered 2 CONC about in this state. Some of Uncle William's grand children are living in 2 CONC this city. 2 CONT 2 CONT I may br making this letter so long that it may become a bore. I suppose, 2 CONC however, that you are not up on your kindred here, and have taken the 2 CONC liberty of going into details at the risk of becoming tedious. 2 CONT 2 CONT It may be of interest to you to learn something of the history of our 2 CONC ancestors in North Carolina and Virginia. 2 CONT 2 CONT It is a well established fact that our original ancestor, Captain Thomas 2 CONC Purifoy, reached America in 1613, about seven years after the settlement 2 CONC of Jamestown, Virginia. He settled in the tide-water section of Virginia, 2 CONC in Elizabeth county, and owned large landed estates. He had a place which 2 CONC he improved highly, having built a mansion of brick on it. This he called 2 CONC "Drayton", after the name of the English residence of the family which 2 CONC bore that name, and was owned by one of the name who held a baronetsy. It 2 CONC was supposed that the English branch of the family came from Normandy 2 CONC with William, the Conquorer. Captain Thomas Purifoy held the position of 2 CONC member of the house of Burgesses repeatedly. This was the colonial 2 CONC legislature of Virginia before it became a state. His son Thomas 2 CONC inherited his estate and died and left a widow and some children. She 2 CONC remarried, and her second husband cabbaged all the property and cast the 2 CONC children out. One of these wandered into North Carolina, and selected a 2 CONC location in Craven county, near the town of Newborne. From that point our 2 CONC ancestor, John Purifoy, came over a hundred years ago. 2 CONT 2 CONT From that point I can hear of persons bearing the name that have 2 CONC scattered into other states, westward. Those bearing the name are now 2 CONC located in several different places in North Carolina, South Carolina, 2 CONC and Georgia and Alabama, as well as Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas. I 2 CONC hear of them also in states of the northwest. Several Englishmen bearing 2 CONC the name have made reputations that are very creditable. 2 CONT 2 CONT I wish you to remember me to your mother, Cousin Martha. Ask her if she 2 CONC remembers that, on one occasion, when the family visited Alabama, her 2 CONC father took back with him a pair of Pea-fowls and some little cedar 2 CONC trees. The writer remembers the incident very vividly, though it occurred 2 CONC more than sixty years ago. The family was stopping at my father's just 2 CONC before starting for home, and the fowls and cedar bushes were collected 2 CONC there and carried, on a wagon to the river fifteen miles away, where the 2 CONC family boarded a steamboat for Mobile, thence by steamer to New Orleans. 2 CONC Thence by steamer up the Washita river. Traveling then was slow and 2 CONC tedious. Now we get aboard a train and with no mishap, we reach our 2 CONC destination in short order. It looks as if travel will yet be by air-ship 2 CONC or air-plane. For over a year there has been a camp for the flyers in 2 CONC this vicinity, and we have been regaled with planes every day and 2 CONC sometimes many times a day. When our peace celebration took place there 2 CONC were over sixty flying over the city at one time. On several occasions, 2 CONC groupes of flyers have flown over and circled around at one time. 2 CONT 2 CONT I wish you to remember me especially to your mother whom I met several 2 CONC times when we were children. I remember your Uncles, however, better than 2 CONC your mother and aunts. Fearing lest you become wearied, and trusting that 2 CONC what I have written may be of interest to you. 2 CONT 2 CONT I am sincerely your cousin, 2 CONT 2 CONT John Purifoy 1 CHAN 2 DATE 16 SEP 2003 3 TIME 10:53:52 0 @I40@ INDI 1 NAME Nancy /Williams/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 23 MAR 1792 2 PLAC Cravens Co.,North Carolina 1 DEAT 2 DATE 9 MAY 1875 2 PLAC Wilcox,AL 1 FAMS @F21@ 1 FAMC @F28@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 7 NOV 2002 3 TIME 14:24:57 0 @I41@ INDI 1 NAME Nicholas Thomas /Purifoy/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1716 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1802 2 PLAC Cravens,NC,USA 1 FAMS @F27@ 1 FAMC @F29@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 NOV 2002 3 TIME 15:00:43 0 @I42@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /Cuthrell/ 1 SEX F 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1776/1770 1 FAMS @F29@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 NOV 2002 3 TIME 15:04:42 0 @I43@ INDI 1 NAME Nicholas Thomas /Purifoy/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1679 2 PLAC Glouchester,VA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1770 2 PLAC Middlesex,VA 1 FAMS @F29@ 1 FAMC @F30@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 NOV 2002 3 TIME 15:12:10 0 @I44@ INDI 1 NAME William /Williams/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F28@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 7 NOV 2002 3 TIME 14:24:57 0 @I45@ INDI 1 NAME Evelin /Mullins/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F28@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 7 NOV 2002 3 TIME 14:24:57 0 @I46@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas Nicholas /Purifoy/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1657 2 PLAC Gloucester,VA,USA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 28 FEB 1686/1687 2 PLAC Middlesex,VA,USA 1 FAMS @F30@ 1 FAMC @F74@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 NOV 2002 3 TIME 15:13:33 0 @I66@ INDI 1 NAME John /Gulley/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 4 MAR 1788 2 PLAC Duplin Co.,NC 1 DEAT 2 DATE 8 OCT 1865 2 PLAC Nevada Co.,AR 1 BURI 2 PLAC Gulley Cem.,Bluff City,Nevada Co.,AR 1 FAMS @F36@ 1 FAMC @F24@ 1 NOTE Moved to Missouri Twp Ouachita Co. Sandlin, Natchez, La. 2 CONT ... 2 CONT It is a well established fact that our original ancestor, Captain Thomas 2 CONC Purifoy, reached America in 1613, about seven years after the settlement 2 CONC of Jamestown, Virginia. 2 CONT ... 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT From http://jezebel.dev.uga.edu/~drainey/booker.htm 2 CONT Captain Thomas Purefoy was principal commander of Elizabeth City County 2 CONC in 1628. He was in service against the Indians in 1627; was Commissioner 2 CONC for Elizabeth City County in 1628; Justice of the County Court 1628-29; 2 CONC member of the House of Burgesses for the lower part of the county in 2 CONC 1629-30; and member of the State Council in 1631. He named one of his 2 CONC estates "Drayton", which Burke states was one of the seats of the family 2 CONC of Purefoy, Baronets, a title now extinct in England. In the Maryland 2 CONC Archives a deposition, dated 1640, made by his wife, who was then about 2 CONC 42 years old, states that she was born "infra Ranson" , Leicestershire, 2 CONC England and had been in Virginia as early as 1629. In 1656 a grant was 2 CONC made to W. Moore for land at Old Poquoson, which had been assigned to him 2 CONC by Lucy, relict of Captain Purefoy and confirmed by Thomas Purefoy his 2 CONC son and heir. Thos. Purefoy the son was a justice of the Court of 2 CONC Elizabeth City County in 1652. In 1675, June 19, Mr. Matson Wakelin, 2 CONC guardian, petitioned the Council in behalf of the orphans of Thos. 2 CONC Purefoy, dec'd, for a survey of their land. So the son was dead prior to 2 CONC that date. Wakelin married the widow of Thomas Purefoy, Jr. 2 CONT 2 CONT Issues of Thomas Purefoy I., and his wife Lucy Ranson: Thos. Frances (Purefoy) 2 CONC Hand married (2) William Lowry of Elizabeth City County and had issue, 2 CONC named in his will, proved May 13, 1724. His daughter Margaret Lowry 2 CONC married Richard Booker, son of Captain Richard and his wife Rebecca 2 CONC Leake. Hannah married Capt.
